Senior Product Manager interview questions

Senior PM interviews are about judgement under uncertainty. These are the questions you'll get more than once across loops at Stripe, Shopify, Notion, mid-stage startups, and FAANG.

The questions (10)

  1. 01Walk me through a product decision you got wrong. What was the signal you missed?
  2. 02How do you decide what *not* to build in a quarter?
  3. 03Tell me about a time you killed a project that was on track to ship.
  4. 04How do you handle disagreement with engineering on technical scope?
  5. 05Describe a launch where the metric moved but for the wrong reason.
  6. 06What's your read on the difference between user research and user feedback?
  7. 07Walk me through how you'd 0→1 a product in a market we already lose in.
  8. 08Tell me about a time you had to demote your own roadmap for someone else's priority.
  9. 09How do you write a PRD that an EM will actually pick up?
  10. 10What do you do in your first 30 days on a new product area?

How to prepare

  • Lead every answer with the *outcome*, then walk back to the decision. Senior interviewers can pattern-match in 30 seconds; don't make them wait for the punchline.
  • Prepare two stories per axis: judgement, influence, technical fluency, customer empathy. Reuse them. Interviewers compare notes on overlap, not novelty.
  • Quantify with the smallest honest number. 'Drove 40% lift' is suspicious; 'Drove 12% lift in week-2 retention on the 6k-user cohort' is credible.
  • Have a real opinion on the company's product before the loop. Walking in with three concrete observations beats walking in with three generic compliments.
  • Practice the no-good-answer scenario: 'Imagine you joined and your VP wanted to ship X, you think it's wrong, what do you do?' This question is in every senior loop.
